Video of CRAC vs CRAH Units Explained in HVAC course by MEP Academy channel, video No. 98 free certified online
What is the difference between a CRAC unit and a CRAH unit in a data center? In this video, we explain how Computer Room Air Conditioners (CRAC units) and Computer Room Air Handlers (CRAH units) are used to cool data centers, server rooms, telecom spaces, and high-density computing environments.
At first glance, CRAC and CRAH units can look very similar. Both move air through the data center, both help control temperature, and both are part of precision cooling systems. But internally, they operate very differently.
A CRAC unit typically uses direct expansion refrigeration, compressors, refrigerant, evaporator coils, and condenser systems to create cooling inside the unit. A CRAH unit uses chilled water supplied from a central chiller plant and transfers that cooling through a chilled water coil.
In this video, you’ll learn:
• What a CRAC unit is
• What a CRAH unit is
• How refrigerant-based cooling works
• How chilled water cooling works
• The difference between DX cooling and chilled water cooling
• Why CRAH units are common in large data centers
• Where CRAC units are still used
• How data centers manage airflow, redundancy, and cooling efficiency
• Why AI and high-density server racks are changing data center cooling design
This video is part of our Data Center Systems Explained series, where we break down data center power, cooling, redundancy, UPS systems, chilled water systems, hot aisle/cold aisle containment, and other critical infrastructure systems.
If you work in HVAC, mechanical contracting, electrical contracting, data center construction, facility operations, engineering, estimating, or project management, this video will help you better understand how data center cooling systems are designed and operated.
