On many commercial construction projects, HVAC and electrical systems install exactly as shown on the drawings — inspections pass, equipment is set, wiring is complete — and everything appears ready for turnover. Then startup begins… and systems don’t work together.

In this first video of our HVAC & Electrical Coordination series, we break down five common coordination mistakes that routinely cause RFIs, change orders, failed inspections, and delayed occupancy.

1️⃣ Duct-Mounted Smoke Detectors
Who provides power? Who wires shutdown? Who connects to the fire alarm system? We explain how unclear scope between mechanical, electrical, and fire alarm trades leads to failed shutdown sequences.
2️⃣ Equipment Disconnect Switches (NEC 430.102(B))
Why disconnects are often missing onsite — and how assumptions between trades create avoidable cost impacts.
3️⃣ Service Receptacles (NEC 210.63)
The required 125V outlet within 25 feet of HVAC equipment that frequently gets overlooked until inspection.
4️⃣ Control Wiring & BAS Interfaces
Power vs. controls vs. automation — where scope boundaries blur and commissioning problems begin.
5️⃣ Fire Alarm Shutdown & Interlocks
When equipment powers up but doesn’t respond during functional testing because wiring responsibilities were never clearly assigned.
